About the Event

Join researcher and historian Helen MacFarlane and author and historian Val Scully for this fascinating, illustrated talk about the Great War and the men of Gibside.

From the Derwent Valley to France, Salonika and Baghdad – tracing the Great War careers of the men of Gibside.

In 2018, the final year of the Centenary commemorations of the Great War, Helen, a volunteer researcher at Gibside, began to investigate how the war had affected the men working on the estate.

Basing the research on the 1911 census, she identified eight men who had served and discovered just how far they had ended up from the mines and pastures of home.

In this fascinating talk, Helen will tell the stories of the men, and how she constructed those stories from the wide variety of documents and records available to Great War researchers.

The talk will be introduced by local author and historian, Val Scully, who will say a few words about how Helen's findings about these local men inspired her to research and publish the 'People's History of Gibside'.

Both Helen and Val will be available for Q&A after the talk, along with signed copies available to purchase.

Tickets £14.95 per person which includes a glass of wine (or soft drink).

Booking essential.

Other refreshments available to purchase from our cafe.

Our evening talks are really popular and often sell out quickly - so book soon to avoid missing out.
