Land of Oak & Iron What's On!

We have had another amazing month at the Land of Oak & Iron Heritage Centre, with our busy café and lots of events, including a successful Live Music and Burger evening and our very popular Blacksmithing Workshops.

We have also recently introduced our new summer inspired menu - with seasonal salads, fajita wraps and much more! Come along and check out our new menu.

Also keep an eye out for the incredible artists and makers we are supporting this month! Not only are we hosting our seasonal Meet the Maker Market but we are bringing the incredible work of Anne James Ceramics, Kate Miller and Cathy Duncan to our Heritage Centre. Anne James will have her ceramics in our shop the two weeks leading up to her Meet the Maker Day on 22nd June, and Kate Miller's work will be leading up to 6th July. Cathy Duncan's exhibition of lino-prints are currently on display in our 'Inside Out Gallery' and display case, all available to purchase.

Make Music Day: Saturday 22nd June, 12pm - 3pm

We are really pleased that our musical friends Kiddars Luck and Hop, Skiffle & Jump will be with us as part of this year’s annual Make Music Day, for a relaxed afternoon of live music in the Heritage Centre Courtyard.

Expect to hear some of the most experienced folk singers and musicians in the North East, as they bring with them local songs and tunes about life in the North East.

Make Music Day is a celebration of music making around the world.  Every year people and organisations from 1,000 towns and cities in 120 countries create events to share their music. All Make Music Day events are free to watch, so please drop by for our own Make Music Day at the Heritage Centre.

Hop, Skiffle & Jump are the North East’s leading skiffle band.  Playing authentic 50s songs they tell the story of how skiffle changed the world of popular music.

Kiddars Luck all hail from the North East of England and specialise in traditional music from the region. They also write their own songs and tunes.

Live Music & Burger Evening: Friday 28th Jun, 6pm - 9pm

Our Live Music & Food Evenings are back at the Heritage Centre! Join us for an entertaining evening of fantastic live music and food on the last Friday of every month.

This month’s local performers are the Northern Railroad Collective.

Northern Railroad Collective formed around 5 years ago and are a 4-5 piece acoustic band playing and singing tunes influenced by the music of Old Timey, Appalachian, Americana and Country. You’ll also catch them mixing other folky foot tapping tunes along with original material.

Café & Bar: Our Chef will be serving up some delicious food for the evening, including a range of burgers, chips, mac & cheese, nachos & cheese and dirty fries, along with sweet treats. Our Café Bar will have alcoholic drinks (along with non alcoholic drinks) and sweet treats available to purchase and enjoy alongside the live music.

No need to book, just turn up for a great evening (last food order 8.30pm). Get here early to grab a seat, order your food and settle in for a great evening.

Calligraphy Workshop: Saturday 29th June, 10:30am - 12:30pm

Join calligraphy artist Chris Bowen for another of his fascinating workshops learning the art of Calligraphy.

For this new workshop, Chris will be exploring lettering forms from the Lindisfarne Gospels - incorporating capitals and lower case with some flourishing and variations.  Demonstrations using pencils and pen and ink.  Along with an explanation of worksheet: proportions, weight and pen strokes.

This detailed workshop will continue with techniques and learning gained from his other workshops - however, it is also suitable for those who have not had a go at calligraphy before as Chris will tailor the session for different levels and will be teaching a different lettering style this time around.

Places for the workshop are limited to allow quality teaching and 1:1 time with participants, so book soon to avoid missing out.

Tickets £28 including materials and a cup of tea or coffee.

Fused Glass Workshop: Saturday 13th July, 10am – 1pm

Nat's Yates is a fantastic glass artist and is well known across the North East.

Join Nat in the next of her creative workshops at the Heritage Centre and create your own beautiful fused glass lantern.

During the workshop you will decorate four individual panels with coloured glass, frits and stringers that will become the side panels of the lantern.

Your panels will then be kiln fired and set into the lantern frame, ready for collection from the Heritage Centre around a week later.

So why not treat yourself to a creative workshop, come along with a friend, or maybe buy as a unique gift for someone special.

Tickets £58 including all materials and firing. Limited places and booking essential.

Nat's workshops often sell out and there are only 8 places, so please reserve your place as soon as possible to avoid missing out.

We're so excited to have CasaLingua with us at the Heritage Centre -  with an evening of fun, food and Spanish. Hola!
