About the Event

Join calligraphy artist Chris Bowen for another of his fascinating workshops learning the art of Calligraphy.

For this workshop, Chris will be further exploring letter forms covered in his first Lindisfarne Gospels workshop, then adding colour and decoration to distinguish capital letters from the basic forms of Insular Half Uncials (as seen in the Lindisfarne Gospels).

Demonstrations using pencils and pen and ink.  Along with an explanation of worksheet: proportions, weight and penstrokes.

This detailed workshop will continue with techniques and learning gained from his first Lindisfarne Gospels workshops - however, it is also suitable for those who have not had a go at calligraphy before as Chris will tailor the session for different levels and will be teaching a different lettering style this time around.

About Chris:  He has been a calligrapher for many years but started out as an oil painter.  He studied at Hornsey College, London before working as a ceramic artist at Royal Worcester, then became a teacher in Worcester, Widnes, Liverpool and Blackfyne Comprehensive School where he was Head of Art, taking over from Sheila Mackie and then Derwentside College.

He was a member of the Liverpool Academy and couldn’t help being inspired by meeting so many creative people. He has practised and taught fine art and calligraphy for over 30 years and is passionate about historical scripts, having studied many original manuscripts at Durham Cathedral library.

He also produces more abstract work combining colourful backgrounds with medieval text and has exhibited in both Durham Cathedral, Hexham Abbey and more recently here at the Heritage Centre.

Tickets for the workshop are limited to allow quality teaching and 1:1 time with participants, so book soon to avoid missing out.

Tickets £28 including materials and a cup of tea or coffee.

Our cafe will be open for other refreshments.
